What We Do

Through projects around town and field trips to other areas, we dedicate time and effort to encouraging civic beauty in the Chathams.

Projects

Organized and Federated nearly three quarters of a century ago, the Town & Country Garden Club of the Chathams is proud of its affiliation with the Garden Club of New Jersey and it is likewise dedicated to expanding the love of gardening through joyful acts of participation in civic beautification, environmental awareness, and historic preservation. As of 2024-2025, our Club is 37 members strong and committed to continuing the tradition of gardening in the community interest. Guided by the vision and spirit of Founders Irene Turner and Sally Vaughan, club members share their love of gardening with open hearts and open arms.

While the faces of the club members have changed over the years, the mission of the club has not. In the early 1960s, club members planned and planted the gardens at Chatham Township’s historic Red Brick Schoolhouse and club members continue to update plantings and tend the gardens today. In the early 2000s, club members designed and planted the gardens at the Library of the Chathams, and tend the gardens today. Recently, in conjunction a grant from the Environmental Commission of Chatham Borough, new beds featuring only native plants were designed and planted by Town and Country members.

The Town and Country Garden Club adorns the Red Brick Schoolhouse and the Library with holiday wreaths, and plants festive annuals at many locations around our towns. Members visit the Senior Citizen Center to lead workshops on arranging for the holidays. The Club offers speakers, programs and trips to which the public is invited as part of our mission to educate the public as to the value of gardening.

From lush perennial borders of the Library of the Chathams and delightful drifts of daffodils at Fairmount Avenue’s Red Brick Schoolhouse, the Town and Country Garden Club of the Chathams continues to do its bit to brighten the Chathams for all.
